MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY- Sheriff's deputies are searching for a registered sex offender after they say he offered a local teen money for sex.
"It is a wake up call. People need to realize, they're here. They're out here," the teen's mother, Vanessa Grubbs, said Saturday.
Grubbs said talking to your kids about the dangers of sexual predators is key. Especially after her son was solicited for sex.
McCracken County Sheriff's Deputies say 27-year-old Gary Dean Nichols is on the run after he failed to turn himself in Friday afternoon. Wednesday, a 14-year-old Farley boy reported to officers that he'd been propositioned by Nichols in his neighborhood. The boy said no, but asked for Nichols phone number. According to investigators, Nichols left his number with the boy. That number and the boy's description led investigators straight to Nichols.
"Thank God he's here, thank God he's safe. Thank God he came back to me," Grubbs said.
That's all she could think when her 14-year-old son came home from church and told her about his encounter with a registered sex offender.
"He was trying to solicit him for sex," Grubbs said.
McCracken County Sheriff's Deputies say 27-year-old Nichols is a registered sex offender in North Carolina, and in Kentucky. Grubbs is worried that Nichols is still on the streets, because their neighborhood is teeming with kids. That, she says, is part of the reason her son didn't run away immediatly after Nichols propositioned him. Instead, he asked for and got Nichols phone number thinking police could trace it to Nichols.
"Six to eight feet from the truck," Grubbs said of how far her son stayed away from Nichols truck. "He said, and the man wanted to shake my hand. He said, and I wouldn't let him. And I told him to drop the number on the ground."
"He did some things that don't necessarily recommend, but like I say, it did make out case," McCracken Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Lynn said, Saturday. "The main thing is to get away."
Lynn wants parents to talk to their kids about the dangers of sexual predators.
"I've always tried to teach them, there's always people out here that might try to do bad things, there's bad people," Grubbs said.
Investigators are continuing to search for Nichols. His last known address is in Calvert City, and investigators believe he is very familiar with the Farley area of Paducah. He's described as a white male, about 5' 9", weighing 180 pounds. If you see Nichols, you are asked to call the McCracken County Sheriff's Department at (270) 444-4719.
