Workplace tips to help victims of partner violence:
If violence is imminent, call 911 and/or building security. Then call the local domestic-violence hotline or crisis hotline.
Encourage the victim to get a restraining order that includes the workplace, and keep a copy at hand. Consider providing a copy to workplace supervisors, security and the human-resources office, as well as police.
Post a photo of the abuser in the reception area and provide it to security.
Get the victim to save threatening e-mail or voice-mail messages as evidence that a restraining order was violated or for future legal action.
Can the victim's phone calls be screened? Number changed? Caller-ID added?
Get the victim priority parking near the building. Ask security to provide an escort to the car or public transportation, or consider car-pooling.
Provide an emergency contact.
Have paychecks sent to another location.
Check out the employer's workplace-violence policy on how to report an incident, including telephone numbers to call.
Ask the victim what else might make her or him feel safe.
