Authorities have new system for tracking sex offenders

Tuesday, October 31, 2006

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida has started using new technology that law enforcement officials say will help them keep better track of sex offenders and ex-convicts on probation.

It's called the Rapid ID system. It scans the fingerprints of offenders when they check in with authorities and immediately confirms their identity.

Police said sometimes ex-convicts send someone in their place to do drug tests. Officers say this new technology will prevent people on probation from getting away with that.

Florida supervises about 180,000 people on probation. The fingerprint scan is matched to a person's criminal history and reveals if there are any warrants on file.

The fingerprint scanners have been installed in all of Florida's sheriff's offices and more than 150 probation offices. The technology may be expanded to the courts in the future.

The Rapid ID system cost about $330,000 statewide.
